Research on reading in university higher education has focused on showing students' deficiencies at the cognitive, procedural level, or showing reading techniques implemented at the time of reading. In this paper, it was decided to focus not on the students and their shortcomings, but on the teachers of the second semester of the University of Ibague. Therefore, the purpose of this research was to characterize the social representations about reading that predominate between three professors of engineering and one of Social Communication and Journalism of the University of Ibague to show the relationship between reading practices and social representations of the same. Hence, the first objective of this research was to identify the social representations in relation to the reading of the abovementioned teachers and that the second objective was to determine the reading practices applied by teachers with the second semester students. In order to identify the social representations, the Alternative Development Plans (PDAs), the second semester courses guided by the teachers, interviews with each one of them, a focus group with teachers of all faculties were finally worked with a focus group of 25 second semester students. All the information was processed through the AtlasTi program and the semantic networks and other tables resulting from the analysis of the information were compiled. One of the most relevant findings is that reading as decoding remains a strongly rooted representation in the academic field. This representation presupposes that the meaning of a text lies in the code and its knowledge. The most widely read reading practice is the resolution of specific information questions from a previously selected text. One important conclusion is that the low levels of reading comprehension undergraduates are directly related to the conceptions and practices of reading that teachers perform inside and outside the classroom.
