La presente investigación describe como están actuando tanto rectores licenciados como no licenciados, en la dirección de las instituciones educativas rurales del norte del Tolima. Para tal efecto, se estableció como método el estudio de caso, el cual posee un carácter marcadamente cualitativo. Se seleccionaron dos instituciones rurales que poseen condiciones similares y diferenciadas en que la primera tiene un rector con formación académica en licenciatura en matemáticas y la segunda un ingeniero agroindustrial. La recolección de información se realizó a través de la entrevista semiestructurada y el análisis documental. Se organizó y procesó la información por medio matriz de análisis, de modo que emergieron resultados que explican las actuaciones de los protagonistas del estudio, permitiendo concluir como se están desarrollando las funciones de rector y qué relación tienen estas actuaciones frente a su formación profesional, cuales son los resultados de mejoramiento y la imagen que proyecta cada uno de los rectores en el ejercicio de su cargo. Resumen en español
This research describes how two school principals are running their rural educational institutions in the north of Tolima. Thus, the case study was established as the research method, which has a markedly qualitative character. Likewise, two rural institutions with similar and differentiated conditions were selected. One of them, has a principal with academic training in bachelor’s art in mathematics, and the other one is running by an agro-industrial engineer. The information was collected through the semi-structured interview and the documentary analysis. Therefore, the information was organized and processed through a matrix of analysis, and the obtained results explain the actors` actions on the study. In this sense, it can be concluded how the functions of each principal are being developed, how these actions are related to their professional training, and which are the results of improvement and the image projected by each of the principals through their work in the institution.
