El presente trabajo de investigación tiene como objetivo principal caracterizar las creencias y concepciones sobre la naturaleza del conocimiento matemáticos que sostiene un grupo de estudiantes del grado undécimo en la institución educativa rural del departamento del Tolima, José Celestino Mutis. La naturaleza de la investigación es educativa. Con un enfoque cualitativo de investigación y mediante el estudio de casos, se identifican las características explicitas e implícitas que sostienen un grupo de estudiantes acerca del conocimiento matemático, la naturaleza de los objetos y la acción del sujeto sobre los objetos matemáticos. El informe de los resultados se presenta en dos fases. En la primera fase se expone un análisis general de las posturas sostenidas por el grupo de estudiantes, mientras que en la segunda fase se presentan los resultados del análisis sistemático de las posturas sostenidas individualmente respecto a la ontología y la gnoseología del conocimiento matemático. Por último, se describen las conclusiones y las perspectivas que se consideran viables luego de esta investigación.

ABSTRACT. This research work has as main objective to characterize the beliefs and conceptions that a group of students of eleventh grade IN RURAL EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTE: Jose Celestino Mutis, in Tolima´s department, hold about the nature of mathematical knowledge. The nature of the research is educational, in which, with a qualitative approach through real situations studies, are identified the explicit and implicit characteristics that a group of students support about: mathematical knowledge, the nature of the objects, and the action of the subject on mathematical objects. The report of the results is presented in two phases. In the first one, it is exposed a general analysis of the positions held by the group of students, while in the second one, the results of the systematic analysis of the positions held individually regarding epistemology of mathematical knowledge, are presented. Finally, after this research, they are described the conclusions and perspectives that are considered viable.
