El presente trabajo fue realizado con el objetivo de indagar acerca de la historia del Ajedrez, deportistas destacados, momentos importantes, entrenadores, entre otros, desde el año 1970 hasta 2020 en el departamento del Tolima. Esta investigación esta permeada bajo un enfoque cualitativo, teniendo en cuenta los resultados de técnicas de investigación como entrevistas y análisis de documentos, documentos iconográficos y textuales. En Colombia, gran número de deportes cuenta con su memoria histórica y trascendencia departamental, pero este no es el caso de un deporte como lo es el Ajedrez en el Tolima, debido a que en dicho departamento esta información no se encuentra recopilada en un mismo lugar, de manera sistemática. Se concluyó la presente investigación presentando los acontecimientos más importantes para el Ajedrez tolimense, en los años comprendidos entre 1970 y 2020. A su vez, evidenciando como el Ajedrez llegó al mundo, a Colombia y al Tolima, destacando escenarios deportivos, entrenadores, clubes, deportistas sobresalientes, entes que rigen al Ajedrez y su organización. Sin olvidar la contextualización de este deporte en la competición más importante que tiene Colombia, los Juego Deportivos Nacionales, demostrando que la rama femenina ha deslumbrado con su participación en las diferentes ediciones, ya que, los triunfos del Tolima, el equipo masculino solo aportó una medalla de bronce, en cambio en la rama femenina sumaron las otras once medallas. Es por eso conveniente incentivar a que nuevos investigadores sigan escribiendo y amplíen la historia del Ajedrez en los próximos años.

The present work was done with the aim of inquiring about the history of Chess, outstanding athletes, important moments, coaches, among others, from 1970 to 2020 in the department of Tolima. This research is permeated by a qualitative approach, taking into account the results of research techniques such as interviews and analysis of documents, iconographic and textual documents. In Colombia, a large number of sports has its historical memory and departmental significance, but this is not the case of a sport like Chess in Tolima, because in that department this information is not collected in one place, systematically. This research was concluded by presenting the most important events for Chess of Tolima, in the years between 1970 and 2020. In turn, evidencing how Chess came to the world, to Colombia and Tolima, highlighting sports scenarios, coaches, clubs, outstanding athletes, entities that govern Chess and its organization. Without forgetting the contextualization of this sport in the most important competition that has Colombia, the National Sports Games, proving that the women’s branch has dazzled with their participation in the different editions, since, the triumphs of Tolima, the men’s team only contributed a bronze medal, in contrast in the women’s branch added the other eleven medals..It is therefore advisable to encourage new researchers to continue writing and expanding the history of Chess in the coming years.
