The limitations of the conventional models used in Colombia and the world for the generation of design storms from IDF intensity-duration-frequency curves, for the purposes of economic and social development planning, within the framework of environmental policy, incorporate much uncertainty to the results. This uncertainty underlies not only the same concept of the IDF curves, while, for example, the depth of the intensities (I) is a function of the duration time (D) that, at the same time, incorporates high uncertainty, and the frequency , on the other hand, is presented as a random variable of storms that does not consider the physical nature. The present investigation carried out in the Quindío river basin, central mountain range of the Colombian Andes, developed a model of synthetic storm of design supported in the lognormal distribution function, which was generated from storm information of the area and processed by the HEC-HMS semi-distributed hydrological model. This storm model is located in a group of alternative storm models to those that use IDF curves, based on internal rainfall records of the area, here in meteorological data, of soils and coverage of the Quindío river basin facilitated by the ( CRQ, 2013) supported in GIS tools such as Argis and Qgis. In order to evaluate the efficiency of the lognormal model, the hydrograms generated in different return periods were compared with the conventional storm models generated from IDF curves: Alternate and Triangular Blocks. The process of evaluating the lognormal storm model was adjusted to the hydrological modeling protocols for the calibration and validation of the flow and time of the peak of the simulated hydrographs in relation to the flow and time to the peak of the hydrographs generated by six storms observed in the Quindío river basin. As a result, greater efficiency of the lognormal storm model was evidenced in the flow of the peak of the hydrograph compared to the peak flow rate reached by the storm model by Alternate Blocks, with the exception of the fifth year in which the difference was approximately -2.1 %, in the other periods of return evaluated, the differences ranged between 4.1% and 8.6%. Efficiency explained to a large extent by the independence of the duration time (Ti) of the lognormal storm model to distribute the maximum daily precipitation.
