The spatial structure and floristic composition of the submontane-montane rain forest at the Reserve Forestal Galilea, municipality of Villarrica-Tolima, Colombia was characterized in six permanent plots sampled of 0.1 ha in pristine forest; on an total area of 0.6 ha and documented with detailed profiles drawings. This Reserve have 1600 has approximately and is localized in the western-flank of the Eastern Cordillera of the Colombian Andes between 1300 y 3100 m of elevation. We sampled all individuals with ≥ 1 cm dbh in a plot of 0.1 ha (10X100 m) in each forest. The forests are structurally homogeneous and are characterized by the prevalence of the arborescents palms (including ferns) in the colluviums. The species richness of magnoliophyta is represented by 108 families of vasculars plants, 317 genera and y 594 species. 6108 individuals of woody plants with ≥ 1 cm dbh were found. In average 148 individuals of freestanding woody plants (shrub o tree-like)/ 0,1 ha with ≥ 5 cm dbh, 74 of them with ≥ 10 cm dbh. The top height is c. 30 m. The highest tree in plots is 35 m, whereas outside the plot tree up to 40 m can be found. Melastomataceae, Rubiaceae, Euphorbiaceae and Lauraceae are the families with highest species number in the six study plots. There is a clear stratification into three tree layers regarding species composition as well as in respect to the relative importance of different families. The distribution of the class of frequency in height parameter, cover and dbh to point out that the majority of the individuals is clustering the inferior class and that the lower tree stratum shows the highest portion. The species with average major respect at I.V.I. are: Quercus humboldtii (Fagaceae) 49%, Hyeronima macrocarpa (Euphorbiaceae) 43%; Ocotea longifolia and Aniba perutilis (Lauraceae) 40%, Protium cranipyrenum (Burseraceae) and Ficus maxima (Moraceae) with 35%. We found species richness to be inversely proportional to altitude and this pattern is expressed between the fertility of the soil and the tree-like density. A principal component analysis we found that two structural’s types of forest showing a clear relation with the physiographic variability in the area. The forest with mid-slope to present a heterogeneity floristic major, in contrast the lands more steep and with soils lower humidity to present a tendency to the dominance of Lauraceae as Aniba perutilis “comino crespo”. Using polar coordinates analysis we found that three plots were floristically similar, in exchange the area of piedmont a tendency slight to floristic unlikeness. We conclude that Galilea forest have a species richness similar to those reported in Colombian, Ecuadorean and Peru. Considering their structure and the richness of woody plants, the forests at the Reserva Galilea are more similar to the forest with similarities environmental such as the high-andino (montane). The results in this study are in line with those claims that tree edaphic specialization of the species tree-like is very low. Beginning with this data waiting to studies the CO2 capture and the management silvicultural sustainable. Key words.
