The study was carried out to estimate the greenhouse gas (GHG) balance in intensive silvopastoral systems (SSPi) at the "El Chaco" municipality of Piedras, by quantifying the carbon fixation (C) in the biomass of the SSP and estimation of emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) in the production of the livestock system. Three SSPi with different ages composed of leucaena (Leucaena leucocephala) and shady and timber trees, multirowed and stargrass (Cynodon nlenfuensis) were surveyed as cover. The livestock component is a tropical dairy, with mechanical milking conformed by Gyrolando cows. The carbon fixation in the arboreal and shrub components was estimated as the storage of carbon in a given time, making nondestructive sampling using allometric models. To determine the GHG emissions of the livestock component, the Tier 2 method proposed by the IPCC was used to calculate the FE emission factors. The FE of CH4 by enteric fermentation was estimated on the basis of gross energy intake EB. The FE of CH4 and N2O for manure management were calculated following the IPCC-2006 guidelines. It was determined that the total carbon stored in the component of the trees in SSPi is higher when its individuals are trees with a higher level in the diameter at breast height (DBH). This is evidenced in SSP1 where there is a greater presence of trees with DBH greater than 25 cm. (9.2 ± 4.4 Mg ha-1 of carbon), whereas in SSP3 where the tree component is superior in number but the DAP does not exceed 10 cm. was 1.3 ± 0.2 Mg ha-1 of carbon. The total CO2 fixation is related to the age, development and total biomass of the SSPs, so SSP3 is setting a higher amount of CO2 (13.2 ± 1.2 Mg ha-1) than the older SSP1 and SSP2 (2.5 ± 0.9 Mg ha-1 and 2.5 ± 0.6 Mg ha-1 respectively). The emissions of 249.5 Mg CO2e year-1 of “El Chaco” are presented through enteric fermentation and manure management of the livestock component. These emissions are equivalent to 1.5 Mg ha-1 year-1 carbon. The general GHG balance in the "El Chaco" Hacienda, for SSP1 and SSP2 where it grazing livestock is not in milk production is positive and with a value equal to 0.2 Mg CO2 ha-1 year-1. For the SSP3 where they graze cows in milk production, the overall balance is also positive with a value of 1.3 Mg CO2 ha-1 year-1. The positive GHG balance of the SSPs studied allows us to verify that they are environmentally sustainable systems since their forage components are capable of fixing more CO2 than the emissions from the same originated by the enteric fermentation and the manure management of the livestock component.
