SUMMARY Aquatic dipterans constitute one of the widest and most diverse taxonomical groups with a great capacity for the colonisation of lentic and lotic freshwater system substrata. At the same time, they constitute a relevant contribution to the food chain and to the evaluation and monitoring systems of water quality. Given their importance, as a ubiquitous group inhabiting diverse habitats, this study aims to determine the composition and structure of the aquatic dipteran fauna of the river Alvarado and its possible relationship with physicochemical factors. During the months of September and December 2012, aquatic dipteran larvae were collected with a surber net (250μ - 0,09 m2) at 9 sampling stations along the river Alvarado and some tributary gorges between the altitudes of 351 and 1057 metres. 3283 larvae were collected belonging to 8 families, 13 subfamilies and 41 types of which 20 constitute as new reports for the department of Tolima. Chironomidae was the family with the biggest abundance and distribution (75.24%), followed by Ceratopogonidae (9.96%) and Simuliidae (7.58%), while Stratiomyidae and Culicidae recorded the lowest abundances (0.03% respectively). Spatially, it was found that the stations river Alvarado – beginning (18.4%) and La Chumba gorge (14.74%) had the largest values of abundance whereas the gorge Cocare (5.24%) and river Alvarado – bridge (5.42%) registered the lowest values. Furthermore, on a chronological level, September reported greater abundances (59.12%) and higher values of diversity and richness (Mg=2,104; λ=0,2484; H’=1,858). It is also noteworthy that the gravel substratum presented the highest values in the analysis of diversity (Mg=3,414; λ=0,088; H’=2,64 y Mg=2,992; λ=0,1056; H’=2,504) whereas the rock substratum reported the lowest values (Mg=3,322; λ=0,1696; H’=2,247 y Mg=2,701; λ=0,256; H’=1,832). Physicochemical parameters such as electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids, alkalinity and hardness, influenced the distribution of aquatic dipteran larvae, the stations La Caima gorge, river Alvarado – bridge, river Alvarado – Caldas Viejo and river Alvarado – beginning being most influenced by these variables in the basin of the river Alvarado as these points exhibited high levels of mineralization and redox of organic material.
